5 Fresh Fit Ideas to Welcome Spring

Temperatures and weather conditions may not reflect it, but according to the calendar Spring is here!  So let’s shake the heavy notes of winter and think fresh and fit.  Sorry readers, I don’t mean making the seasonal switch from red to white.  Here are  5 ways to celebrate the changing of the season with a healthy flair.

Put the Christmas Fitbit to meaningful use

New Year’s Resolutions have come and gone, time to make an active lifestyle part of our regular lives.  Spring is here, so let’s get outside  and move.  Find a hiking partner and go explore.  Join an outdoor boot camp or a learn to run clinic.  Sit down and plan your week with time set aside daily to get out and get active.  And guess what, that spring garden clean up counts!

Spring clean in the kitchen

Change of the seasons means time for a change in our diet.  Seek out some fresh, clean spring vegetable recipes to lighten up.  Yes there’s still a chill in the air, so keep it warm, but fresh, seasonal and light.  Here’s one of my favourites from fellow Canadian blogger and cookbook author Angela Liddon  of Oh She Glows http://ohsheglows.com/2013/04/15/warm-spring-salad/

Or I loved this fresh and simple spring asparagus and pea soup from Epicurious https://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/green-pea-asparagus-and-parsley-soup

So satisfying, fresh and filling, yet only 200 calories per serving.

Make your summer vacation plans

Besides booking that summer vacation now is the time to get ready to feel your best for the break.  No I am not saying wish spring away.  Live in the now.  But the sweat you build today will provide results for tomorrow.  Want to keep up with your children in the park?  Feel great in those lighter summer clothes or keep up with that city walking tour?  Set your goal, seek out a personal trainer or join a small group and make the goal a reality.

Swap out your car for your bike

Leave the car in the garage and jump on your bike!  You’d be surprised how much better you feel making the morning commute or school and supermarket run on your bike rather than by car.  Fresh air, calorie burn, endorphin releasing activity and me time.  You will arrived refreshed rather than tense, tight and in a rush.  And likely quicker than you thought.

Set a friend/family activity challenge

No better way to hold yourself accountable for a goal than to share it.  So find a companion and set a weekly mutual challenge.  Perhaps its grabbing your skipping rope and jumping for 10 minutes a day.  Or following a training plan to train for your first 5 km run.   20 pushups and a minute of plank a day?  Or a weekly 20 minute family game of tag in the park.  Whatever it is identify the challenge, and bring it on.
